UPDATE: 9/01/09
We are still fine. The fire has moved east of us and it is no longer a threat for us. There are still 6 separate fires and they are not contained. Many homes and lives still need your prayers. One of the two fireman killed was the husband of my daughter ’80’s co-worker and friend. They were expecting a child in a few weeks. My condolences to both their families.
UPDATE: 8/31/09
We are still okay. I can see the orange – red glow over the top of the hills but as long as the wind stays as it is we will be fine. This isn’t the first time this has happened and I imagine it won’t be the last. A few years ago we actually saw flames across the top of the hills above our neighborhood. Now that was a scary day. Many people are losing their homes though and my heart goes out to them, especially the families of the two courageous firefighters who lost their lives.
There is a fire in the Angeles National Forest. This is only a few miles away from my home and it has been burning out of control since yesterday. These photos are from my front yard. I hope they get it under control soon because it is scary looking and the air quality is bad. I took these at 5pm today. Everything has a golden hue to it and the silence is deafening, like being in the eye of a storm.

My son ‘88 took the photos below of the cloudy smoke in and around our neighborhood today. I will be posting updates from time to time but for now everything is fine. The fire rages on and there have been some evacuations but so far we are not in any danger. The air quality is quickly becoming an issue and ash is falling so that is going to be a problem.
False Moon. Great shot.

How scary! You and your neighbors are in my prayers.
Oh my goodness. I hope you guys are safe and don’t have to evacuate. You’re in my prayers as well.
Goodness that is scary! Now I understand what you mean by you being that short-haired, naked stick gal.
I hope and pray for your safety.
I told you I was that stick girl. A blogger down to the core. When life hands you lemons, blog about how many, how big and how yellow.
As everyone else has allready told you….you and your family are in my prayers. I can’t imagine how scarey this is for you. On the plus side you got some great photos…LOL
Oh, wow wow wow. I’m hoping for the best and thinking of you!
Oh no! Saying prayers for you…
I hope they get it under control. I’ll be praying.
Stupid fires! It’s the one thing I absolutely don’t miss from living in OC.
Those pictures are so scary. We have been watching on the news, but until you know someone that is affected by it, it doesn’t seem real. Glad you guys are OK. I am so sorry for the family of that fireman. They are in my prayers.
I find myself thinking of you when I listen to the news updates. Thank you for keeping us updated with your posts.
