Fire Update 9/05/09….

Well it is looking pretty good with the fires. They are mostly contained and the air is starting to clear up. I would like to thank the brave firemen and volunteers who risked their lives to stop these fires. You did a helluva job ladies and gentlemen. If you are interested in what this is about you can read more here at Fire in the Sky. and to see the time lapsed photography of the fires go here

There is no danger to us now. The air quality is improving and visibility is better. Thank you for all your prayers and good wishes. Time for life to normalize, at least for a while.

Message to the arsonist responsible: They will find you. You killed two of their own and they will not rest until they catch you. You made a mistake somewhere and they will find it and use it to hunt you down. Your time as a free individual is severely limited.

This is the way it was earlier this week. The first two photos are from the LA Times Online

This was in Acton which is 15 minutes away from my home and why we were getting so much smoke.

It was a good day and I had so much fun you would have thought I had been drinking. They only have beer at the fair and I don’t drink beer. I wonder if they would let me open a frozen margarita booth next year.

We Went To The Fair pt. 1….

This was to have been the post on 9/30/09 if not for the fires. It is a 2 part post about our trip to the fair on the 29th. So here it is although it seems a little trivial now.

Our annual fair is in town so I took the grand-kids and what a good time we had. ’75 and ’88 came along too, which added to the fun. I love the fair, especially the food but this year my favorite food vendor was not there. What’s up with that Aussie Fries, where were you? We had a date and you didn’t show, not acceptable. Aussie Fries are potatoes sliced thickly like chips and then battered and deep fried. You have several choices of dipping sauce, yum. You gotta love the Australians for this one except when they are a no show. Oh well, I guess I can console myself with shaved ice and kettle corn.

What the fair is all about

B likes to play a little game with me. It is called “you can’t take a nice picture of me grandma, ha ha” Well I kept at it face after face until “Ha Ha yes I can”.

Fire In The Sky….

UPDATE: 9/01/09

We are still fine. The fire has moved east of us and it is no longer a threat for us. There are still 6 separate fires and they are not contained. Many homes and lives still need your prayers. One of the two fireman killed was the husband of my daughter ’80’s co-worker and friend. They were expecting a child in a few weeks. My condolences to both their families.

 UPDATE: 8/31/09

We are still okay. I can see the orange – red glow over the top of the hills but as long as the wind stays as it is we will be fine. This isn’t the first time this has happened and I imagine it won’t be the last. A few years ago we actually saw flames across the top of the hills above our neighborhood. Now that was a scary day. Many people are losing their homes though and my heart goes out to them, especially the families of the two courageous firefighters who lost their lives.

There is a fire in the Angeles National Forest. This is only a few miles away from my home and it has been burning out of control since yesterday. These photos are from my front yard. I hope they get it under control soon because it is scary looking and the air quality is bad. I took these at 5pm today. Everything has a golden hue to it and the silence is deafening, like being in the eye of a storm.

My son ‘88 took the photos below of the cloudy smoke in and around our neighborhood today. I will be posting updates from time to time but for now everything is fine. The fire rages on and there have been some evacuations but so far we are not in any danger. The air quality is quickly becoming an issue and ash is falling so that is going to be a problem.
