Patience and Dead Chicken….

dead chickenThis is a photo from one of our many trips years ago across the United States with the kids in our Motorhome. This was somewhere just outside Needles I think. When you ask the proprietor why it says dead chicken he says ” What! You want to eat it live” I think he waits all day for someone to ask him this. He has several other jokes like a squirting ketchup bottle that is really a string. He makes himself laugh and the kids as well. It was towards the end of a 3 week trip and we were hot, tired, cranky and this was just what we needed, to laugh and be silly while having an ice cold Coke and eating an order of dead chicken.

Spring Cleaning….

cleaningThis weekend 2 of my daughters and their husbands are cleaning my house. At first this was not okay with me because I am use to doing everything myself. Now I realize that I can’t do it all myself anymore and the only reason to turn down help would be my pride and that is not a good enough reason as far as I’m concerned. So I decided to suck it up and let them do it. They are steam cleaning everything and the floors have never been shinier. It still feels strange but with the diabetes and the neuropathy I have limitations, I don’t like it but that’s the way it is. They are doing such a good job and soon everything will be squeaky clean. I can’t say thank you enough to them for giving their time and their sweat. It’s a big job because when you can’t do something yourself you tend to stop seeing the dirt after awhile. There is still a lot to do like painting and they will come here as often as they can to help so I am going to have to find a special way to pay them back someday. I tell you I have raised darn good kids and they married keepers that’s for sure. I will have to tell you at another time some of the funniest things we found in the strangest of places.

Oh The Times They Are A Changing….

whitehousesignsTaking a moment to reflect on how much things have changed over the years. Can you ever imagine doing this to the White House now. You can’t even get this close anymore let alone put up protest signs……….well…..okay someone photo shopped this but you use to be able to get this close. Many things have gotten better since the 1960s. Civil rights is one of the major changes from that era, but we have also lost some Civil rights as well since 9/11 and that is also a big change.

On a personal note I have changed my last name and for the most part my first name as well. I was Mom, just Mom or “honey” for many of those years. My hair styles have gone from short and long, layered and bangs, weaved and dyed to gray and holding.  My weight has gone……..well…..we won’t discuss that, let’s just say it has changed. I have moved over 20 times and across 4 states since then.  I have had 20 pets not including my children’s menagerie. I have read maybe a thousand books, not exaggerating. I carry a phone with me and get my email and text even while in the bathroom instead of one phone for the whole house. I can cook a baked potato in 8 minutes instead of an hour. I am writing this blog instead of a diary. I am a grandmother instead of a Mom, instead of a daughter, big big change. So like that song by Bob Dylan which has been going through my head today “Oh the times they are a changing”, a song that hasn’t changed but could have just as easily been written about today’s political climate.

Another major change is that when Dylan sang the song I was one of the “sons and daughters” mentioned now I am one of the “rapidly aging Fathers and Mothers”.  So go ahead, sing it with me and then we will do a round of Kumbaya.

The Times They Are A-Changin’

Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won’t come again
And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
And there’s no tellin’ who
That it’s namin’.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin’.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside
And it is ragin’.
It’ll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin’.
Please get out of the new one
If you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin’.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin’.

Sins Of Dorzia…..

No that is not the name of the latest video game. It is the name of my son ’88’s band. He plays a 6 string bass guitar in 2 different bands, Handicapped Astronaut and Sins of Dorzia. Recently the band (Sins of Dorsza) played at the Whiskey A Go-Go on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood. It really took me back to when I was a teenager and I would go to the Whiskey to hear bands like Santana, Janice Joplin, The Doors and other great artists, it was the ’60’s after all and Sunset Blvd. was the place to be. It just happened to be my backyard so to speak at this time, ’67-’71. Now my son is playing there on the same stage and I want him to be impressed with its history. It was where legends were born for gosh sakes, a dirty, grubby little hole of a place, but legendary. Anyway, kudos to the band which has a sort of rock punk sound. You have stood where legends stood. You have played where legends played. Now be impressed and be legendary.
