Members of Sag picket for fair wages

I read an article on Reuters this morning about the actors labor talks failing again. Their talks with the producers have failed so far and now the talks with the advertisers on a commercial contract has also broken down. Once again the actors union leaders are threatening to call for a strike vote. What are they thinking to do such a thing in this economy. We still haven’t recovered from the writers strike enough to weather an actors strike. Everyone wants more money and better hours and a better health plan, well guess what you can’t have it. You shouldn’t be asked to give up anything either, instead the contracts should remain the same for at least now. Too many lives would be impacted by a strike and when that strike was over their homes and livelihoods would still be gone, unrecoverable. The actors unions are not going to bail me out when I can’t pay my mortgage because there is no post production work. I am not an actor but my life is tied to theirs through an industry paycheck. Their strike would unemploy  thousands of people who are not actors. A strike vote at this time would be a selfish act, look around you the next time you are working and see the people you work with. How are you going to feel when this is over and you go back to work knowing that the guy who does your makeup, or the guy who handles your key light, or the guy who brings you your coffee has lost everything because of you. To the producers I say, remember we are your consumers and if we don’t buy your products or see your movies, or buy the dvds because we can’t afford to due to a strike you caused, it will impact your bottom line…..profit. Is that extra money really going to ease your conscience.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day…..

This is a holiday about celebrating being Irish. Personally I resent the stereotype of drinking till you puke, dressing like a leprechaun, hoarding gold and all the general silliness that goes on. I am proud of my heritage but I am not sure what St.Patrick is the patron Saint of…….green!

“Vampire” unearthed in Venice plague grave

This is from an article in reuters 3/12/2009 it was too good to pass up so I am reprinting it here for you to enjoy. Nothing sexy about these vampires……..16th century vampire

By Daniel Flynn ROME (Reuters)….Italian researchers believe they have found the remains of a female “vampire” in Venice, buried with a brick jammed between her jaws to prevent her feeding on victims of a plague which swept the city in the 16th century.

Matteo Borrini, an anthropologist from the University of Florence, said the discovery on the small island of Lazzaretto Nuovo in the Venice lagoon supported the medieval belief that vampires were behind the spread of plagues like the Black Death.

“This is the first time that archaeology has succeeded in reconstructing the ritual of exorcism of a vampire,” Borrini told Reuters by telephone. “This helps … authenticate how the myth of vampires was born.”

The skeleton was unearthed in a mass grave from the Venetian plague of 1576 — in which the artist Titian died — on Lazzaretto Nuovo, which lies around three km (2 miles) northeast of Venice and was used as a sanatorium for plague sufferers.

The succession of plagues which ravaged Europe between 1300 and 1700 fostered the belief in vampires, mainly because the decomposition of corpses was not well understood, Borrini said.

Gravediggers reopening mass graves would sometimes come across bodies bloated by gas, with hair still growing, and blood seeping from their mouths and believe them to be still alive.

The shrouds used to cover the faces of the dead were often decayed by bacteria in the mouth, revealing the corpse’s teeth, and vampires became known as “shroud-eaters.”

According to medieval medical and religious texts, the “undead” were believed to spread pestilence in order to suck the remaining life from corpses until they acquired the strength to return to the streets again.

“To kill the vampire you had to remove the shroud from its mouth, which was its food like the milk of a child, and put something uneatable in there,” said Borrini. “It’s possible that other corpses have been found with bricks in their mouths, but this is the first time the ritual has been recognized.”

While legends about blood-drinking ghouls date back thousands of years, the modern figure of the vampire was encapsulated in the Irish author Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula,” based on 18th century eastern European folktales.

It’s Because Your Fat….

fat so

These days if you are a fat person and you need medical attention, good luck. I have never seen a worse case of fat-ism. than I do in the medical community. I know that doctors are not what they used to be, but saying “it’s because your fat, you need to lose weight” as an excuse to cover up their inability to diagnose what’s wrong with you is condescending. They use this excuse to explain why your back hurts, why your head hurts, why your stomach hurts, why your vomiting, etc. If you are not obviously bleeding or have a bone sticking out of your leg, they can’t tell what the problem is. Oh, they will run test, lots and lots of test but if nothing pops out at them, you are on your own. Trying to find out why you don’t feel well is like playing a game of craps, the odds are not on your side. We count on doctors to relieve our suffering and to fix what isn’t working, we trust them but maybe we shouldn’t. We should instead trust our own instincts. Who knows our bodies better than ourselves? Sometimes you are sick or you hurt because there is something wrong with you and it has nothing to do with your weight. The next time a doctor tells you that the numbness in your left hand would get better if you would just lose 30 pounds, don’t let him get away with it, look him right in the eye and without missing a beat say “and you could be a better doctor, if only you were smarter and not such an ass”.
