Friday Soapbox: Let The Competition Begin….

This is George

I love my Kindle 2™ “George” and I wouldn’t trade him for anything. But for those of you who don’t have an e-reader yet and are thinking of getting one check out Barnes and Noble’s new e-reader Nook™. It’s pretty cool with all the same features as the Amazon Kindle™ plus a few more nifty features Kindle doesn’t have yet. It has a color touch screen for ordering and storing books. You can also lend your e-books to a friend and personalize Nook using your photos as screensavers. Nook is available starting Nov. 30th 2009. You can pre-order now on Barnes & Noble.com for $259.00. For more information on the Nook go here. For information on the Kindle 2 go to Amazon.com.

The lending part is the feature I am most jealous of. It has been the one big problem with my Kindle 2, you can’t lend the e-books to a friend. The price of the e-reader is still very high but most e-books are $9.99 or less (sometimes free) so you do save money over time. The E-readers biggest advantage over traditional books is immediate access and storage space, which is what makes it worth it in my opinion. Being able to store 1500 books in a space that is smaller than 1 sq. ft. is priceless if you read as much as I do. There is a lot to be said for being able to shop for a new book while sitting on the toilet an airplane or at three in the morning when you can’t sleep. Of course there is nothing like the smell, the touch, the sound that turning the page makes of a real book. It should be interesting to see who comes out on top in what is shaping up to be a big competition for your dollars. Is there room for 2  top dogs in the e-book business? We shall see…….my vote is on George.

J. T. E. C. With Love….

Jill over at Scary Mommy is having a contest to find other scary mommies. Am I a scary mommy? Well I am older than most of you so I am sure I have made the most mistakes. I have yelled, I have cried, I have threatened. I have shaken my finger and spanked a few bottoms. But I have also loved unconditionally and forgiven all teenage words and deeds as well as kissed a million boo boos. I am not only a scary mommy, I am a scary grandma too. I wrote this poem about my 4 kids  a while back but I am going to enter it into the contest because I believe it says it best.

J.T.E.C. With Love

My child… My friend… My nemesis

The love of my life

The ache in my soul

No one else can cut so deep or cause me such sorrow

No one else can make me doubt myself so completely

But no one else can touch my heart with such joy

Moments of such sweetness

Memories of times so cherished

Often overshadowed by despair

We remember it all, good and bad

Though no one remembers it the same

Time has softened the rough edges for some

But magnified the imperfections for others

Dysfunction is a word too often used

While forgiveness is hardly ever heard

Still so much to discover, about ourselves and each other

4 times the stubbornness

4 times the disagreements

4 times the hope

4 times the love

My child… My friend… My nemesis.

Recognition Is Nice….

When I woke up this morning I was greeted with all sorts of good news. Some of it I can share with you now and some of it will have to wait. First my sister is home from the hospital and doing well and that is good news indeed.

creative bloggerThen when I opened my blog this morning it was to find this “Kreativ Blogger” award from Jane at They call me Jane. I am so honored she thought of me, thank you Jane. She is a wonderful writer whose blog I read everyday. She is witty and funny and shares her life in such a way that makes you feel like a friend. Go see Jane, you will be glad you did.

Now I am supposed to give this to other bloggers I enjoy reading but there are so many of you, just look at my reading list in the sidebar. To not choose would be a cop out and that wouldn’t be right either so:

I am going to give it to Ink over at Inktopia who always keeps me on my toes and makes me think with her post. It also helps to keep a dictionary handy. Ink never fails to amuse and astonish me with her plethora (see I do learn) of knowledge.

I would also like to give the award to Kate (formerly Life in Italy) over at E ORA her new blog to welcome her to the WordPress community and because I just love her post. Give Kate a little bloggy love and maybe she will tell us what E Ora means.

Finally I would like to give the award to Michelle at Aimless Topics who is new to blogging but has a voice I would like to encourage. Her writing is creative and honest.

Part of the Kreativ Blogger Award is I need to share seven random facts about myself. What! only seven, my whole life seems so random.

1. I married my high school sweetheart in Las Vegas at 1 am.

2. I liked peanut butter and mustard sandwiches when I was a kid. (don’t judge)

3. Disneyland and I are the same age.

4. No one wants to play “Trivial Pursuit” with me because I win.

5. I like Opera but have never been to one.

6. I’m a Dallas Cowboy fan.

7. I think Dr. Pepper is better than Coke a Cola. I know, I know, but I do so simmer down ya’ll.

Friday Soapbox: Freedom….

49892426

One of my favorite websites to visit is the L.A. Times Pictures in the News. This is what I found today. I don’t understand how anyone can be against freedom. I mean look at that statement, how can they be against freedom. I know they hate the United States but we are not the only source of freedom in the world. Zealots of any kind scare the crap out of me because they believe they are right when they light the fire to sacrifice you. Down through the centuries millions of people have died because someone believed their way was the right way, the only way to be. If you are going to protest something, then protest against intolerance and indifference to other cultures not freedom.

I love that I have the freedom to choose what my life will be. Where my life will be. Who my life will be with. There are many things I could think of to protest against but freedom isn’t one of them. It’s because of that freedom you can choose not to hate. Because of that freedom you can stand there holding up signs full of hate without getting arrested and hanged for it.  Because of that freedom you have the right to choose not to be free and continue to be ignorant. You can make a difference in this world if you want to without hating and killing, just look at Mother Teresa.
